A new Glonass station will be born in Brazil
The fifth in the country, built by the Russians by the end of the year
Gennady Saenko of the Russian space agency Roscosmos has revealed to the national press that Russia should soon begin work on the construction in Brazil of a new ground station for the Glonass satellite navigation system (Global Navigation Satellite System). Construction is expected to be completed by the end of the current year, and the facility will be the fifth Glonass station in the territory of the South American country. "A contract has already been signed with the Federal University of Para. The tentative date for the completion of the installation and for its commissioning is the fourth quarter of this year -Saenko specified it-. Two stations of this kind have already been erected in Recife -the capital of the north-eastern State of Pernambuco- and in Santa Maria -in the southern State of Rio Grande do Sul-. Two stations of different types are operating at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro" . The new structure according to Russian intentions will increase the accuracy of the system and improve its performance, and according to the agreements it can also be used by Brazilian scientists for their research.
Glonass is the Russian answer to the American Global Positioning System (Gps) and the European Galileo system.
