Salini Impregilo and Fincantieri to rebuild Genoa bridge
With new “PerGenova” company
Salini Impregilo and Fincantieri, through its subsidiary Fincantieri Infrastructure, are awarded the contract for the reconstruction of the bridge over the Polcevera river in Genoa, which will be built by the newly established company "PerGenova". The new bridge, which starts from the project of Renzo Piano, foresees the completion of the work in 12 months, from the moment in which the area will be made available, after the completion of the demolition activities.
12 months to restart Genoa. This is the dream that we are going to give just before Christmas to the Genoese, remembering the victims of this terrible tragedy, to start the city quickly, giving a strong signal to the whole country, because economic recovery and employment can start again from great works. We are in Genoa for a spirit of service and with Fincantieri we feel equipped to help the city and its people. Many of our workers who work at the Third Pass are Ligurians and we want to be close to them after the tragedy that struck this city". With these words, Pietro Salini, CEO of Salini Impregilo, welcomed the news of the assignment of the project announced by the extraordinary commissioner for reconstruction, Marco Bucci.
"From the very beginning Fincantieri became available, we had to do it in Genoa and Liguria", commented Fincantieri's managing director, Giuseppe Bono. "Our expertise in the management of complex processes and products puts us in a position to realize the best possible work to give the city a good, functional and long-lasting project. I am convinced that the new infrastructure will be the best example of an Italy that, if it combines its own excellences, can make a system and perform great works at the service of the country".
The viaduct on the Polcevera is an essential junction for the connection between Genoa and France, with the port and in general with the surrounding areas, an essential element to make the city recover its role as a major port and commercial hub. The bridge will consist of a steel deck, with a continuous girder total length of 1100 m, consisting of 20 bays. The project includes 19 reinforced concrete cells with an elliptical section positioned with a constant pitch of 50 meters, with the exception of the span on the Polcevera torrent and that on the railway lines, where the distance between the centers is between 50 and 100 meters. This solution allowed the optimization of the structures and foundations, limiting the dimensions of the same, in a strongly urbanized and anthropized context.
To build the steel structures, the Genoa-Sestri Ponente shipyard, the Valeggio sul Mincio plant (Verona) and, if necessary, other Fincantieri Group plants in Italy will be used. The production of the metallic deck will be carried out in macro structural elements that will be transported at the foot of the work, assembled and welded, completing the working of each single span on the ground. In this way the interventions at height will be reduced to a minimum. Instead, the lifting will be carried out using mainly special equipment, called "strand jacks", which will allow to align the deck to the main steel element previously placed at the top of the batteries, with the use of mobile cranes. In collaboration with Cetena, the Fincantieri Group research company based in Genoa, an integrated bridge monitoring, control and inspection system will be provided and installed.
The reconstruction of the bridge is destined to become the symbol of the rebirth of a great city like Genoa, but also the symbol of a new phase of development of the country, showing that even in Italy it is possible to make infrastructures in a short time, from the identification phase of the need for the execution phase. The Genoa project represents a model of collaboration between large complementary companies, which makes it possible to provide the city and the country with a unique know-how of large Italian companies.
