The first presidency of a European since the establishment of the International Civil Aviation Organization - VIDEO
For the first time, a European holds the presidency of the ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization) council. To the microphones of AVIONEWS Salvatore Sciacchitano, who started his mandate from January 1, 2020, after being elected in November for the three-year period 2020-2022 in Canada, where the headquarters of the international organization is based, the specialized agency of the United Nations intended to set technical standards and practices in the civil aviation sector with the aim of supporting the development of international air transport.
Sciacchitano was presented and supported for this prestigious role by the ECAC, the European Civil Aviation Conference, a pan-European organization made up of 44 Member States.
"ICAO has five strategic objectives: optimization of air transport safety, prevention of illegal acts, improvement of the environment, increase of connectivity and capacity of world air transport. Alongside these, it contributes to those of sustainable development of the United Nations, technological innovation challenges, such as space and sub-orbital innovation" said Sciacchitano.
