Restored communication IAEA with Chernobyl

Grossi: "Excellent news that the authority can now contact the site directly when necessary"

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said that direct communications between the organization and the Ukrainian nuclear power plant of Chernobyl have been restored yesterday. The positive news comes after the administration in Kiev informed last March 10 that it had lost contact with the site; the regulator continued to receive information about the facility only through the plant operator.

IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi said that "This was clearly not a sustainable situation, and it is very good news that the regulator can now contact the plant directly when it needs to. We welcom the re-establishment of phone communication between the State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate of Ukraine (SNRIU) and the Chernobyl NPP. It was another important step in the process of resuming Ukraine’s regulatory control of the site of the 1986 accident, where various radioactive waste management facilities are now located".

The Russian military had taken possession of the nuclear plant on February 24. The occupation had lasted five weeks (until March 31). A commission of IAEA experts will visit the site by the end of April to assess any safety issues, provide equipment and repair remote data transmission systems.
