Ryanair purchases 30 CFM Leap-1B engines

An investment of 500 million dollars

Ryanair announced today (June 10) that it has reached an agreement with CFM for the purchase of 30 new Leap-1B spare engines, with a list price of 500 million dollars. These fuel-efficient engines, scheduled for delivery over the next two years, will support its fleet composed of 210 B-737 Gamechanger aircraft and also the B-737 MAX-10, whose delivery is expected in 2027.

These 30 new engines will significantly increase the airline's spare engine pool, bringing it to over 120 units, enhancing the operational capability of the carrier. The Irish low-cost airline plans to expand its fleet to 800 B-737s (all powered by CFM engines) to grow traffic to 300 million passengers per year by 2034.

A CFM customer since 1998, Ryanair operates the largest Boeing fleet with CFM engines, including the largest 737 Next-Generation fleet with CFM56 engines in Europe. The Irish carrier currently operates 181 B-737/8-200 aircraft with Leap engines, with 29 airplanes still to be delivered from a 2014 order. The low-cost airline placed a new order in 2023 for Leap-1B engines to equip 150 fixed B-737/10 planes and 150 optional ones.
Since entering service, CFM Leap-1B engines have accumulated nearly 30 million flight hours and 12 million cycles. This advanced family reduces fuel consumption and CO emissions by 15 percent compared to CFM56 engines, along with a significant noise reduction.
