15% tariffs: the agreement between von der Leyen and Trump

Investments by the EU in the US and the purchase of energy are also expected

After months of negotiations, the United States and the European Union have finally reached a trade agreement: US tariffs on European products will be 15%. The agreement was reached during a meeting between European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and US President Donald Trump on July 27 in Turnberry, Scotland, where the tycoon had travelled to inaugurate one of his golf estates.

"This is a good deal for everyone", Trump declared. Von der Leyen also called it "a great deal" reached after "tough negotiations", saying it will bring stability to both allies. "I want to personally thank President Trump for his personal commitment and leadership in achieving this breakthrough," the Commission president added, apparently positive about the deal reached.

The decision to raise tariffs to 15%—versus the initially threatened 30%—comes with additional investments that the European Union, as Trump stated, will have to make in the United States amounting to $600 billion, in addition to spending $750 billion on energy. This should allow the EU to diversify its sources of supply, contributing to Europe's energy security and reducing dependence on Russian supplies, as explained by von der Leyen.

Regarding Italy, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni commented from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia: "We will need to study the details of the agreement. We will need to work on it further because the agreement signed yesterday is a preliminary agreement and not legally binding. Therefore, we still need to work on the details, and there is still work to be done". She also emphasized the need to verify the possible exemptions and the products to which they apply before evaluating the decision.
