Poland's airports reopen after Russian drone strike in Ukraine

Unmanned aircraft violated Polish airspace. An Italian G-550 Caew aircraft was also activated

Warsaw, Modlin, and Rzeszow airports resumed operations this morning; Lublin Airport also reopened later. As "Flightradar24" reported, at least 14 incoming flights were rerouted overnight and into the early hours of the morning. Polish airspace was closed overnight after the Polish military detected multiple violations of the country's airspace during a Russian drone attack on Ukraine. According to Prime Minister Donald Tusk , "The first airspace violation was recorded around 11:30 pm on Tuesday; the last around 6:30 am on Wednesday. There were 19 violations, but these are not the final figures". In response to the attacks, a Nato source reported, Polish F-16 fighter jets, Dutch F-35s, jointly operated Nato air refueling aircraft, and an Italian Air Force G-550A Caew (Conformal Airborne Early Warning) spy plane were activated, the most advanced multi-sensor system with air surveillance, command, control and communications functions in service with European air forces.

"The drones that posed a direct threat have been shot down", the prime minister wrote on "X". "I am in constant contact with the Nato Secretary General and our allies", he added. "Ground-based air defense and radar reconnaissance systems have now returned to normal operations", the Polish Armed Forces Operational Command announced on the same social network.

Poland immediately called an emergency meeting of government ministers at 8:00 am local time. The North Atlantic Council will also meet in an extraordinary session in Brussels this morning, as explained by a Nato spokesperson. According to the Polish military, the violation of its airspace would amount to an "act of aggression". Other Nato sources have stated that, although it is considered a deliberate incursion, last night's attack should not be considered a direct attack on Poland.

The number of Uavs that violated Polish airspace has not yet been determined, but Tusk described it as "enormous". Polish press has reported the discovery of several pieces of Uav (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) debris: for example, a damaged drone was found in Czosnówka and another in Mniszków, while debris fell on a residential building in Wyryki-Wola, a village in the Lublin Voivodeship, in central Poland. The Polish armed forces and government have urged citizens to remain calm and not approach or touch debris from unknown objects, but to simply report any findings.
