Pakistan extends closure of airspace to Indian flights until August 23

The measure was imposed after the escalation of tensions between India and Pakistan last April

Pakistani aviation authorities announced today a new extension of the overflight ban for all Indian aircraft over their airspace. The restriction, initially imposed in a context of regional tensions, will remain in force for another month, until August 23.

This decision, communicated through a NOTAM (Notice to Airmen), means that no aircraft operated by Indian companies or registered in India will be allowed to fly over Pakistani territory. The measure applies uniformly to both civilian and military aircraft, including those owned or leased by India.

The repeated closure of the airspace highlights Islamabad's continued caution regarding the regional security situation and has significant implications for commercial air routes traditionally crossing Pakistan to connect Europe and the Middle East with South Asia. Indian airlines will be forced to continue using alternative routes, which are longer and more expensive, impacting flight times and operating costs.

Pakistani Government sources have not provided specific details on the reasons behind this further extension, but the move fits within a framework of historically complex relations between the two neighboring countries. Observers believe the decision reflects Pakistan’s intent to maintain tight control over its airspace during a period of geopolitical sensitivity.
