Z-20T: China displays the armed utility helicopter, strategic enhancement for the Pla
Presented at the 7th China Helicopter Exposition in Tianjin, the latest variant of the medium Z-20 aircraft

Expand operational capabilities by integrating troop transport with ground-attack and armed-escort functions for the air-assault forces of the Chinese People's Liberation Army
The port city of Tianjin was the stage for the latest demonstration of China’s new aerial capabilities at the 7th China Helicopter Exposition, which opened this Thursday, 16 October 2025 (and will conclude on Sunday the 19th). At the center of attention is the Z-20T, a new variant of the medium utility helicopter Z-20, whose operational versatility in combat was detailed by senior figures of the Chinese defense industry.
The new aircraft, already employed by the Ground Forces of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) for demonstrations in Tianjin, was designed to go beyond the traditional role of transport and rapid deployment of troops and cargo. According to Zhu Minfeng, deputy chief designer at the China Helicopter Research and Development Institute, the Z-20T was conceived to also carry out aerial attack missions and provide direct fire support to ground units. "The helicopter can operate effectively across a wide range of terrains, from plains to high plateaus, and is capable of employing a broad arsenal that includes anti-tank missiles, air-to-air missiles and rockets".
Compared with the baseline Z-20, the "T" variant features crucial modifications that amplify its combat potential. In particular, two stub wings have been added that allow the installation of modular weapon pylons, additional external fuel tanks, or electronic warfare pods. An electro‑optical target detection system has also been integrated, essential for battlefield surveillance and munition guidance.
The Z-20 project, the first medium-lift utility helicopter independently developed by China, envisaged from the outset the creation of a family of variants for different missions, exploiting its significant modification potential. This evolution is considered a major step forward for the enhancement of airborne assault units. Wang Yanan, editor-in-chief of the magazine Aerospace Knowledge, stressed that the Z-20T will increase operational flexibility on the battlefield. Thanks to its payload capacity and enhanced armament, the helicopter will be able to combine troop transport and penetration operations while providing escort for other transport helicopters, and will not necessarily require accompaniment by dedicated attack helicopters.
The Z-20T is not an absolute novelty, but its public display and operational demonstration in Tianjin mark a further milestone in its introduction. The helicopter was first spotted by arms enthusiasts during a test phase in January 2021. It was later officially declassified in November 2024 on the occasion of the 15th China International Aviation and Aerospace Exhibition. Its first public flight display took place last month during a large parade held in Beijing.
