Eco-tax on airline tickets incoming in France

It will cost from 1.50 up to 18 Euros

By 2020 passengers departing from France airports will have to pay an ecotax  on air tickets from 1.50 up to 18 Euros. Transport Minister Elisabeth Borne announced it today. The tax is part of the package of measures against climate change envisaged by the second Ecological Defense Council convened by Emmanuel Macron at the Elysium palace.

Aircraft are responsible of almost 2% of global carbon dioxide emissions. The government plans to revenue over 180 million in the first year, which Borne stated will be used for investments in more modern and environmentally friendly transport infrastructures.

The tax will be applied on the flights of all carriers departing from the French airports, but not on those arriving. The amount will be variable: it will cost one Euro and a half in economy class for domestic and European flights and € 9 for those in business; but for extra-EU flights € 3 in economy class and € 18 for those in business. The flights to Corsica, the French overseas territories and air links will be exempt.
