A long series of strikes by ITA Airways employees gets underway

Unions: "We will have a hot Autumn in the air carrier's operations"

We receive and publish it:

"Today's meeting with ITA Management on 'Issues with the industrial plan, National Collective Labour Agreement, Erroneous disbursement of Pdr' held between the undersigned trade unions and professional associations and the top management of ITA to discuss the items subject to the first phase of the cooling-off and conciliation procedure pursuant to applicable regulations, ended with a negative outcome.

We reiterated what had already been expressed regarding the '2026–2030 industrial plan issues', calling it 'flat' and weak, not responsive to the growth opportunities offered by the sector at the Italian, European and global levels. ITA stated that the loss recorded in the last published financial year (-227 million) does not allow immediate growth, which would only be possible once consolidation is completed and break-even is reached.

In the view of the undersigned, the variables that caused these losses are not attributable to ITA's flight crew and ground staff, who, despite being understaffed and operating under an expired contract, have nonetheless supported and sustained company processes with excellent performances, ensuring results and limiting disruptions. According to ITA Airways management, the consolidation time horizon envisaged would not guarantee the development that the LH Group considers necessary, thus prompting it to concentrate investments on other carriers within its group, deemed 'safer in terms of economic return'.

Such an unjustified lack of confidence on the part of the shareholders, in our opinion, is fed above all by the company's demonstrated inability to effectively address and manage network choices and its maintenance processes, and the attempt to shift its responsibilities onto the workers is totally unacceptable.

With regard to the need to promptly reach renewal and implementation of the working rules for flight crew and ground staff, governed by the CCNL for Carriers and by company-level second-tier agreements, we emphasized that the timing hypothesized by the company — first a break-even is needed — is absolutely not commensurate with the urgency we have highlighted. It is also reiterated that there is a substantially different interpretation of the agreements governing the Pdr paid in 2025, with ITA reaffirming the correctness of its interpretation, which we contest.

From what has emerged, we have naturally decided to conclude the procedure with a negative outcome, referring the discussion to the next ministerial level, within which we hope for a clear and concrete change of pace by management and the shareholders, thus continuing the cooling-off and conciliation process preparatory to resolving the issues we have raised, or to the proclamation of a long series of strike actions".
