USA: plane crash during air show

The two pilots lost their lives in the subsequent crash to the ground

Two 1930s North American T-6 Texan military aircraft (registrations N2897G and N57418) collided in flight during the "Reno Air Races". The two pilots lost their lives in the subsequent crash to the ground. No injuries were reported on the ground or among the public. The accident occurred in the United States, at the Reno Stead Airport, in the State of Nevada, where the event was held.

According to an initial reconstruction of the accident, the planes had just finished a race valid for the national championship in the T-6 Gold category, and were preparing to land at the American airport. While they were approaching runway 08, an aircraft impacted the tail of the other plane, severing the rear part of the airplane and the left wing, causing it to fall to the ground. Shortly afterwards the other aircraft also crashed to the ground.

The accident occurred around 2:15pm local time on Sunday 17 September. The organizers of Reno Air Racing and local authorities are collaborating with the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to identify the causes and the exact dynamics of the accident.
