Spring long weekend: "air prices skyrocketing"

Assoutenti's complaint and Assoviaggi-Confesercenti's findings

Average ticket prices for Italian flights increased by +19.1%, for European ones was +16.5% and for international flights by +7.3%. The spring holidays arrive and with them, as per tradition, the cost of travel in the skies skyrockets. The data refers to fare increases compared to the same period in 2023. A known market mechanism: the strong demand for travel leads to a surge in costs.

It emerges from a survey conducted by Assoviaggi, the Italian association representing companies operating in the travel organization sector affiliated to Confesercenti federation. The monitoring concerns customers who book a flight for the next two weeks in March and find themselves faced with increased costs.

"All the ancillary services are also increasing in price, from restaurants which cost 3.8% more than last year to amusement parks (+4%), passing through museums and monuments (+3.7%)", said Gabriele Melluso, president of Assoutenti, the association that protects consumer rights.

The price increases for spring long weekends will cost Italians approximately +10.5% more on average compared to last year. This is due to the strong increases throughout the tourism and transport sectors. The increase in spending is estimated at a total of 780 million euros compared to 2023, stressed Assoutenti, which provides estimates of the expenses that families expect in view of the holidays ranging from 25 April to 1 May.
