Greece, taxi strike for 48 hours

Uber's presence at Athens airport has also been contested

Since 6:00 this morning in Greece a taxi drivers' strike has been underway against airport policies deemed inappropriate for their category. The strike has been called for 48 hours, and will end at 6:00 on Friday, May 30.

According to the Attica Taxi Drivers Union (SATA), Deputy Minister of Transport Konstantinos Kyranakis refuses a meeting to clarify the situation. The protest is motivated by the controversy over the removal of taxis from bus lanes, Kyranakis' proposal to use taxis for subsidized public transport at night, and Uber's presence at Athens' Eleftherios Venizelos International Airport. In the latter case, the company's ability to have designated pick-up points to pick up customers directly at the terminals, after booking the service via an app, is contested: this would put taxis at a disadvantage as they wait in line. A clear legal framework governing the chauffeur-driven rental business is needed, according to taxi drivers.

To facilitate travel to the airport, the frequency of bus and subway services was increased on strike days.
