Lufthansa Cargo strengthens its position in Europe through a strategic partnership with ITA Airways

New global connections and advanced logistical solutions for the industry at the heart of the Munich Fair

News and Strategies Presented at the "Transport Logistic 2025" Event Scheduled from June 2 to 5

Lufthansa Cargo consolidates its position as an active carrier in Europe by announcing a significant expansion of its network and the launch of a strategic collaboration with ITA Airways. The airline unveiled yesterday at the "Transport Logistic" fair in Munich (scheduled from June 2 to 5) its latest innovations and ongoing commitment to providing cutting-edge logistics solutions for leading global industries.

Thanks to the integration of ITA Airways' cargo capacity, Lufthansa Cargo expects to increase its global transport capacity by nearly 20%, adding Rome as its fifth European hub starting from mid-June, alongside Frankfurt, Munich, Vienna, and Brussels. The first flights in partnership with ITA Airways will depart on June 16 from São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, and Buenos Aires, with Rome as the destination. This cooperation, subject to regulatory approvals, will see Lufthansa Cargo gradually take over the commercialization of ITA Airways’ entire cargo network, significantly enhancing connections to and from Europe.

Ashwin Bhat, CEO of Lufthansa Cargo, emphasized the importance of this expansion: "Our strength as part of the Lufthansa Group, the largest airline group in Europe, combined with our quality service, reliability, and expertise in transporting all types of cargo – whether airplane engines, insulin, or microchips – creates a unique value offering for our customers". The company thus reinforces its mission of "Enabling Global Business", connecting markets and commercial partners worldwide.

Lufthansa Cargo’s network spans over 350 destinations worldwide, with more than 7,500 weekly flights, including the capacities of its dedicated cargo fleet, the AeroLogic joint-venture, and the belly capacities of Lufthansa Airlines, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, Discover Airlines, SunExpress, and soon also ITA Airways. Complementing this, an extensive Road Feeder Service (RFS) covers over 115 destinations across Europe.

Among the network updates: starting July 3, Lufthansa Cargo will add Beirut to its short- and medium-haul network in the Middle East, with a weekly flight from Frankfurt.

The air company also highlighted its expertise and specialized transport solutions for key sectors such as automotive, pharmaceutical and healthcare, semiconductors, and aviation. Frank Bauer, who will assume the position of Chief Operating Officer (COO) on July 1, underscored how the company ensures "on-time delivery of production parts and spare components". In 2024, for example, approximately 850 tons of "Emergency" products have been transported with maximum priority, while over 130,000 shipments have been handled via td.Zoom, the high-speed service.
