Sicily (Italy): additional municipal tax on airline tickets abolished

The new law concerns the four smaller airports on the island. Airgest celebrates

Ombra: "The regional government is writing an important chapter for Sicilian mobility". Alongside the abolition of the tax on airline tickets, there is also the fight against high airfare prices, investments in the airport terminal, and the enhancement of the Palermo-Trapani railway network

With the approval of the mini financial maneuver by the Sicilian Regional Assembly, the abolition of the additional municipal tax on airline ticket costs for the four minor Sicilian airports has become law. Airgest, the management company of the "Vincenzo Florio" airport in Trapani, welcomes this regulation, which will result in greater convenience for airlines and consequently an increase in supply and a reduction in prices, encouraging the addition of routes to airports that until now were not considered strategic, thus bringing new competitiveness and stability for future growth.

"With the achievement of this milestone, which we have hoped for years", commented Airgest President Salvatore Ombra, "the regional government is writing an important chapter for mobility in the Trapani area and beyond. We are indeed confident that the elimination of the municipal surcharge for the minor airports of Trapani, Comiso, Pantelleria, and Lampedusa will generate additional traffic beneficial to all interested carriers. We will work diligently to make wise use of this significant concession from the Sicilian Region to attract them. The increase in flights will, naturally, entail a strengthening of the economy, tourist traffic, and all related sectors".

The President of the Sicilian Region and his assessors have provided strong momentum for mobility. They further clarified that the Sicilian Region, as the majority shareholder of the Birgi airport, through this measure has not only helped Trapani but all the island’s minor airports to make the Sicilian civil airport system increasingly robust, already bolstered by the extraordinary performances of Catania and Palermo.

"For this reason", Ombra concluded, "we thank President Renato Schifani for his continuous support for the entire sector, always guided by a clear vision for the benefit of all Sicilians, with particular attention to our airport and our territory; Economy Assessor Alessandro Dagnino, who saw the initiative’s potential from the beginning and staunchly advanced it; Infrastructure and Transport Assessor Alessandro Aricò, not only for supporting the specific regulation and the sector, including the important fight against expensive airfares, but also for the significant € 13 million investment in the Trapani terminal from the Development and Cohesion Funds, the modernization of the Palermo-Trapani rail network via Milo—which will finally feature a station at Birgi—and the recent reopening of the Trapani-Marsala route. We are convinced, in fact, that future development will rely on intermodality and rapid connections between the two airports of Western Sicily. Finally, heartfelt thanks go to the Trapani deputy Stefano Pellegrino, who strongly advocated for the passage of this regulation".
