Russian drones in Poland: urgent Un Security Council meeting called

According to a diplomatic source, the meeting may take place on Friday, September 12th.

"At Poland's request, an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council will be convened regarding Russia's violation of Polish airspace" the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on "X." The Un Security Council is composed of China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States, along with 10 other non-permanent members. The request for the meeting among the Un countries follows Polish prime minister Donald Tusk's invocation of article 4 of the North Atlantic Treaty following yesterday's violation of the country's airspace by Russian drones (see AVIONEWS). The date of the meeting has not yet been specified: the South Korean Un mission, which chairs the Council this year, is reportedly deciding when to set it. A diplomatic source reportedly told the Russian news agency "Tass" that the meeting is scheduled for Friday, September 12.

Russia's foreign ministry denied that Poland was the target of the drones, writing in "X": "The attack did not hit any targets in Poland, and the drones' range is less than 700 km". Moscow also said it was ready to confront Warsaw. Polish Foreign minister Radoslaw Sikorski does not consider the Russian version plausible. Sikorski reiterated in "X": "I remind and appeal: the threat to Poland comes from the East, not the West; courageous and tormented Ukraine is our ally in keeping Putin's army away from Poland's borders; let us remain calm, united, and resist Russian agents". A reconstruction by the German newspaper "Der Spiegel", based on an analysis of the drones' trajectory, suggests that they targeted a logistics center for arms supplies to Ukraine. Since 2022, a significant portion of Western arms deliveries have been passing through Rzeszow Airport, in southeastern Poland. However, the refueling center is reportedly protected by German forces with two Patriot batteries, which have detected the presence of unmanned aircraft in Polish airspace. Nato air defense has consequently been activated.

According to some analysts, the airspace violation was a way to test Nato's response and Poland's ability to address the threat. A political, as well as military, test. Last night, Tusk announced on "X" that during his conversations with the leaders of France, Germany, the United Kingdom, Italy, the Netherlands, Ukraine, and Nato, he received not only expressions of solidarity, but also "proposals for concrete support for the country's air defense".

Today, the Polish air navigation services agency announced the restriction of air traffic in the eastern part of the country from 10 September to 9 December 2025 in the form of the restricted zone EP R129 (see AVIONEWS).
