Refinery strike raises fuel supply alarm at Italian Southern Airports
Reduced reserves: possible delays and gradual cuts to flight schedules
The continuity of jet fuel supplies at the airports of Bari, Brindisi, Catania, Crotone, Lamezia, Reggio Calabria, Salerno, Naples and Palermo depends on reserves described as limited. Should the situation fail to evolve rapidly, a gradual reduction in operations may become necessary at these airports.
The difficulties stem from critical issues in the supply chain linked to the ongoing strike at the Naples refinery. Flight scheduling delays may already occur today, while fuel availability continues to be the main source of pressure on the affected airport system.
The situation raises questions over the measures the Minister and the Government intend to adopt. Any prolonged restrictions could cause disruption to numerous passengers in transit through, or departing from, the airports involved. Has the notion that air transport is an essential public service been overlooked? Airlines, too, are beginning to voice their concerns.
