Leonardo: gifts to Qatar for billionaire contract?
Italian Senator Vitali to AVIONEWS: transparency is needed
The Italian ministers of Economy and Defense will have to to explain how the consortium led by Leonardo obtained the maxi-order in Qatar for 16 NH-90 land-based helicopters and 12 NH-90 aircraft for naval operations. The order has a value of three billions. Forza Italia senator Luigi Vitali has filed a question to find out if Leonardo has guaranteed "gifts" worth 120 million to the Arab country. It is about training helicopters and others for VIP transport use. Senator Vitali asks to know if the requirements of law 231/2001 have been respected and if it intends to take measures against Leonardo's management. Reached by AVIONEWS, the senator clarifies that his intent is to know whether before, during or even after this operation, some government representative has been aware of all the terms of the contract. "It is just as that Leonardo works for profit, especially since it is a mainly public company, but this must be pursued and achieved with fairness and transparency especially when it comes to relationships with countries where legality is not always in the first place and it does not always respect the standards of western countries".
There is also an urgent need for clarification by Leonardo's top management to avoid shadows on the possible renewal of the position for the CEO, expiring in a few months.
