Ukrainian war: Italy sends missile system

Second Samp/T air defense apparatus arriving in Kiev

The Italian Government will provide Ukraine with a second Samp/T (Sol-air moyenne-portée terrestrial) air defense system. The announcement confirms rumors. This is a move with which the Rome Executive intends to respond to Kiev's requests for greater help in repelling Russian missile attacks, which have become increasingly intense in recent months.

"It is known that we will send the Samp-T, which is an instrument of air defense, therefore of protection, which Ukraine itself asked us for", declared the Foreign Minister and vice-president of the Italian Council of Ministers Antonio Tajani, interviewed by the state television broadcaster "Rai".

The Samp/T is an armament consisting of a wheeled vehicle carrying a multiple launcher of medium-range surface-to-air missiles with a range of 100 km. The device is developed by the European Franco-Italian consortium Eurosam (Mbda and Thales) and is designed for the interception of aircraft and missiles. The launchers can accommodate a variable number of missiles ranging from 8 to 48.
