Myanmar: a plea to the international community

"Washington will sanction coup plotters, international community must recognize legitimately elected government"

The Burmese community in Italy calls for the international community to take a clear position in the face of the "tragic situation in Myanmar", after the Tatmadaw, the national army led by General Aung Hlaing, deposed the legitimately elected government on 1 February 2021 November. Among other things, although in recent days the junta has granted amnesty to 3113 prisoners, there would be 3240 civilian victims recorded in the last two years.

"The junta uses any means to intimidate and even kill, because it knows that if it loses the war, it will crumble a more than seventy-year-old empire founded on profit and violence. That is why we ask the United States to impose economic sanctions, as the European Union, while the international community must recognize the Government of unity: we are not second-class citizens", declared Yimon Win Pe, a representative of the Burmese community in Italy, according to reports by the "Dire" news agency.

The opposition to the military junta "concerns the entire population, without distinction of age, gender or profession". But a war is also being fought in Myanmar -he adds- which "has caused enormous losses in the army, which is now calling even retired soldiers to fight. If before the coup there are patchy clashes" between individual armed ethnic groups , today "the conflict is extended to a national level. The country is on fire".

The Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (Aapp) of Myanmar estimates over 21,000 arrests in the last 26 months, of which almost 17,500 people are still in custody, some of whom have already received a sentence. Among them many politicians, including the leader of the winning party, Nobel Peace Prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi, sentenced to fifteen years in prison. On the other hand, the releases amount to 3,866 and the victims are 3,240.
