Libya-Turkey: "Instabul will teach Haftar a lesson"

Considerations on the sidelines of the new meeting in Istanbul with Sarraj

According to "Al Arabiya" on Sunday 19 January, Libyan general Khalifa Haftar will take part in the Berlin conference on Libya. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Fayez al Sarraj returned after 2 days to Istanbul again to discuss with Turkish leader Erdogan. This is a meeting that follows the one we had with Russia to discuss the pacification in Libya: while Sarraj signed the truce, Khalifa Haftar instead left Moscow without joining the agreement: the general justified his stance by declaring that: "There will be no signature on the Moscow agreement for several reasons, the most important of which is Turkey's intention to exploit it by imposing itself as a reference actor in Libya to legitimize the two memoranda of understanding signed with the President of the GNA (Government of the Libyan National agreement, Ed). At the same time it is not acceptable to the implicit recognition of the parallel parliament in Tripoli as a new organ in conflict with the legitimate government of Tobruk, in addition to the fragmentation of the armed forces".

During the sidelines of the new meeting in Istanbul, Recep Tayyip Erdogan threatened: "The coup leader Haftar has shown his true face, he has not kept faith with the commitments made; if he should resume hostilities, we will give him a lesson".
