Alitalia is waiting for the European antitrust outcome

Is it survival at risk?

As already known, Alitalia is under the magnifying glass of the European Commissioner for Competition in view of the bridging loans that have been granted over the years for the rescue of the company. Already since the first liquidity injection in 2017 of EUR 900 millions, the carrier has been under the careful supervision of the European antitrust. However, the ongoing investigation does not consider the bridging loan of a further 400 million Euros granted to Alitalia by decree (see AVIONEWS). If Margrethe Vestager deems it appropriate that the airline should return the money received, for Alitalia a critical phase would begin which could endanger its survival. So the commissioner Giuseppe Leogrande went to Brussels to obtain more time. If this is the scenario, it is essential to make an agreement as soon as possible, to start an industrial plan, scheduling the rescue and relaunch in detail.
