American Airlines, 19,000 layoffs since 1 October

It is 14% of the airline's workforce

Covid-19 does not look anyone in the face and even in the aviation sector it does not give discounts to companies, large or small. The main consequence of the health emergency in this sector is a lower number of flights, which then translates into a series of layoffs by air carriers to try to overcome the crisis. The latest airline that is doing this is American Airlines, which, as confirmed by many sources, is ready to cut jobs by as many as 19,000.

The reduction is expected to become effective starting from next October 1st, a drastic measure that coincides with the last day of the period in which firing was prohibited, as established by the aid plan in favor of the US company (25 billion dollars). The figures are impressive: last March, American Airlines had 140,000 employees, so the cut in the last few hours corresponds to 14% of the total workforce; in 50% of cases, moreover, the dismissals will concern hostesses and stewards.
