5G service: minimal disruption on air travel

Faa: security issues will be addressed without significant disruption

Aviation safety issues related to the January rollout of 5G service in the United States will be faced "safely and with minimal disruption". It was communicated yesterday by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in a written testimony sent to the White House. It is a preview of what will be said during a hearing before the U.S. House of Representatives Transportation and Infrastructure Committee.

"Hazardous interference affecting any of these systems could be potentially catastrophic. There is no scenario in which these are acceptable from a safety perspective". "Although some links where 5G services are present have undergone the required risk mitigation measures, significant disruptions to the air transportation system have been avoided", Faa Administrator Steve Dickson writed.

"We recognize that some altimeters -he continued- particularly older models used by segments of the aviation industry, may not receive approval related to their safety in the presence of 5G communications and interference and may need to be replaced". So, Faa will allow further deployment of the wireless service in the coming weeks. A decisione based on test data collected to date.
