Samantha Cristoforetti is on the ISS

The docking to the International Space Station in the Italian night

The Crew Dragon spacecraft carrying the Italian astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti docked this night at 1:40 Italian time the International Space Station (ISS), on board of which there are now a total of 11 people. Thus begins the mission "Minerva", which will continue for nearly six months. The crew will conduct scientific research in various fields: materials science, health technologies, botany. The return is scheduled for mid-September. 

The trip from planet Earth to the orbiting station lasted a total of 17 hours. It began at 9:52 am with the launch from the Kennedy Space Center, in Florida. Together with the Italian astronaut there were the commander of the Crew Dragon spacecraft Kjell Lindgren, the pilot Robert Hines and the mission specialist Jessica Watkins. To welcome them seven other members already on board the ISS: Raya Chali, Thomas Mashbirn and Kayla Barrow of the US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (Nasa) US; Oleg Artemyev, Denis Matveyev and Sergei Korsakov of the Russian space agency Roscosmos, and the German Mathias Maurer of the European Space Agency (ESA).
