USA: 70,000 pilots attacked by lasers

According to the FAA data based on complaints collected from 2010 to 2021

After the 9700 attacks with lasers against aircraft, recorded during 2021, the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said that the increase in cases is linked to a number of concomitant factors: from technological evolution that makes them more powerful tools, to the increasingly low purchase price, not to mention the ease of use of these pointers.

"What you might see as a toy has the capacity to momentarily blind the crew member". Although no aircraft has ever crashed from a laser attack, the risk of a "tragic outcome" from these stunts remains high. "This is not an arcade game", said FAA's acting administrator, Billy Nolen.

From 2010 to 2021, nearly 70,000 pilots in the US reported being the victim of a laser attack, says Federal Aviation Administration. Although the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) today restricts the sale of lasers that exceed the power of 5 milliwatts, experts say that much more powerful pointers are easily purchased on the internet.
