Aviation safety: an air shield against viruses

Innovative system that reduces risks in the cabin is about to receive FAA certification

An airplane cabin air purification technology system designed to prevent the spread of viruses, by creating a kind of environmental barrier around each passenger, is expected to receive certification from the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) by July.

It is a technological solution that is about to receive official approval at a key moment: travel demand is on the rise ahead of the summer months, but fears about full aircraft cabins have not gone away. The new technology is called Air Shield and would provide improved effectiveness of overhead vents in aircraft cabins.

A system that complements and enhances that of Hepa (High Efficiency Particulate Air filter) filters. Air Shield technology was recently acquired by the US company Pexco Aerospace. According to the company, tests aboard A-320 and B-737 aircraft show a 76 percent reduction in shared airflow among passengers.
