Ukraine war: working for peace

Erdogan-Putin phone call had two important developments

A phone call to rekindle hope on peace negotiations. That was the goal of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who called his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin yesterday. An attempt by a North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) country very close to Moscow, seeking to broker a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenski to which the Kremlin has said no for now.

"There were two important developments in the phone call. The first concerns the establishment of a mechanism to ensure security in the disputed areas where the conflict is going on. A mechanism that is based first and foremost on a table at which representatives of the parties to the conflict and third countries sit. The UN must step in as a guarantor", explains a former air force officer, Mesut Hakki Casin, to the "Agi" news agency.

"The second step" he adds, "concerns an observatory that would allow reporting all violations of the rules of engagement and ultimately allow preventing clashes of any magnitude through the presence of military forces from third countries. Turkey is ready to play its part and assume the role of an observer country".
