Aircraft. Lufthansa cancels more than 900 flights

Short-haul ones cancelled in July, and with Eurowings you can also rebook or travel by train

Germany's Lufthansa Group has announced the cancellation of more than 900 short-haul air connections scheduled for July. The reason for the cancellation? Staff shortages that will prevent airlines across Europe from responding to booming travel demand in the warm season. Another 100 flights have been cancelled by Brussels Airlines, Swiss International Air Lines and low-cost Eurowings between Germany, Belgium and Switzerland.

"The entire industry, especially in Europe, is currently suffering from bottlenecks and staff shortages. This applies to airports, ground handling services, air traffic control and even airlines", the German airline explained.

Lufthansa's cancellations affect its Munich and Frankfurt airport hubs. The latter's management company, Fraport, where the airline is based, also warned that staff shortages could cause severe delays at Germany's main hub. Staffing levels were severely reduced in the pandemic months and were not replenished quickly enough to cope with the vigorous recovery in demand for air travel.

Meanwhile, Eurowings, a subsidiary of Lufthansa, has let it be known that passengers will be informed of cancellations and supported to rebook on another plane. Otherwise, but this is only for German travellers with a ticket on domestic routes, they will be offered to take the train.
