Switzerland has closed its airspace

A hardware problem at the root of the disruption

Switzerland has closed its airspace indefinitely due to a technical problem reported by Geneva-based air navigation service provider Skyguide. As a result, all commercial air connections over Swiss skies were canceled this morning for safety reasons, while those that were scheduled to land at Zürich or Geneva airports were diverted to neighboring countries.

"Incoming long-haul flights are currently diverted to various airports in neighboring cities, including Lyon, Milan and Vienna", the company said. "Short-haul ones are currently not taking off", explained Skyguide spokesman Vladi Barrosa

The company said it was not a cyber attack, but pointed out that a hardware problem could be at the root of the disruption. The effects on air traffic in these hours mainly affect connections within European borders and those coming from the United States.
