Flight attendant boom in China

Air carriers overwhelmed by candidates CVs with travel resumed

With the intense travel demand in the post-pandemic, especially in view of the Summer 2023 high season, Chinese air carriers have launched the most massive recruitment campaign in recent years. And so the desks of the personnel office are overwhelmed by the curricula of the candidates. The highest stacks are those in which the job applications of applicants for the role of flight attendant are gathered, one on top of the other, which the airlines have a strong need for.

Indeed, during the pandemic, between 2020 and 2022, the total number of flight attendants in China decreased by about 11,000. This marks an 11% drop from the pre-pandemic level: in 2019 it was 108,955. It emerges from the monitoring of the Chinese Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC). A phenomenon linked to early retirements, layoffs and non-recruitment or stabilization of seasonal staff.

The main Chinese carriers, including Xiamen Airlines, China Southern Airlines and Spring Airlines, have launched massive recruitment campaigns for a job position, that of flight attendants, which is low-paid in China but has lower requirements than in Western countries: all you need is a diploma and basic knowledge of English. The catchment area to choose from, according to an estimate, is around 11.58 million graduates.
