Ukrainian war: Kiev's new defense minister

Rustem Umerov takes the place of the resigning Oleksii Reznikov

Ukraine has a new Defense Minister. Oleksii Reznikov presented his resignation to the Verkhovna Rada, Kiev's Parliament, which was then made public in a post on the social network "Telegram", in which he published the official document he signed. In his place, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky designated Rustem Umerov.

The new head of the defense ministry, 41 years old, is an entrepreneur in the telecommunications sector. He is part of the Crimean Tatar community. He was elected to Parliament in 2019 and since 2014 he has been co-president of the Crimea Platform, an international diplomatic initiative that aimed to revoke Russia's annexation of the peninsula. Most recently, Umerov served as Kiev's representative in previous failed peace negotiations with Russia.
