NATO purchases 220,000 artillery shells

Deal value around 1.2 billion dollars

The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) has signed a contract for the purchase of approximately 220,000 155 mm artillery shells. The value of the deal is around 1.2 billion dollars. The sale is part of initiatives that have a dual objective: strengthening the deterrence and defense capabilities of the member countries of the Atlantic Alliance, giving support to Ukraine in the war against Russia.

The contract was signed by NATO Secretary General, Jens Stoltenberg, and by the Director General of the NATO Support and Procurement Agency (Nspa), Stacy Cummings, head of the agency that deals with logistics procurement for the Atlantic Alliance.

The latest purchase dates back to November 2023, when Nspa purchased six Boeing E-7A "Wedgetail" military aircraft (based on the B-737 civil aircraft), next-generation command and control aircraft that will replace the older E-3A Awacs (Airborne Warning and Control System), with a contract to be signed in 2024. Since July 2023 Nspa has contracted munitions worth approximately 10 billion dollars.
