Cybersecurity: Italian undersecretary Mantovano audited

Minardo (Defense commission): "It is necessary to strengthen awareness and cooperation between cyber defense actors"

Undersecretary of State at the Italian Presidency of the Council of Ministers, Alfredo Mantovano, who holds the delegation for cybersecurity and anti-drug policies, heard today in the Italian Chamber of Deputies. In his report, the politician stated that in 2023 there was "a significant increase" in cyber attacks compared to 2022: there were 1411, an average of 117 per month.

"The strengthening of a cooperative paradigm underlined in the hearing by Undersecretary Mantovano is an urgent necessity in terms of cyber defense, especially in consideration of the worsening of international tensions and the consequent increase in cyber attacks", declared the president of the Defense commission of the Chamber of Deputies", said the politician Nino Minardo, at the conclusion of the hearing.

"The fact-finding investigation -he added- that we have launched today aims to be exactly a contribution aimed at strengthening awareness and cooperation between all the actors in cyber defense and many elements of the recent cybersecurity bill also go in this direction, starting with the important coordination rules between the National Cybersecurity Agency, intelligence and the Judicial Police".

Meanwhile, Mantovano specified that there is "a strong vitality of pro-Russian activist groups, essentially with Ddos-type attacks, while since last October the attacks of pro-Palestinian groups have also increased. The attacks are "particularly heavy" for Italy of the ransomware type, which sees us "among the most affected European countries". Another critical issue concerns "attacks on healthcare facilities", which in addition to the theft of data, can create problems for operating rooms and technical diagnosis activities.
