Türkiye also wants Eurofighter military planes

European aircraft under consideration, as well as US F-16s

Turkey would still be interested in purchasing 40 European-made Eurofighter Typhoon military aircraft. In detail, it would have already discussed the details with Germany, a member of the consortium that produces the plane, together with Great Britain, Italy and Spain. According to recent rumors, they would also be bought if Ankara reaches an agreement with Washington for the purchase of Lockheed Martin F-16 "Fighting Falcon" fighters.

It was revealed by some international media, who cite an official from the Turkish Ministry of Defense as a source. The United States had recently anticipated that it would be ready to sign the agreement with Ankara, a deal worth around 23 billion dollars. But the sale would be tied to a decision by Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan: he must give the definitive green light to Sweden's membership of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).

Ankara's request dates back to October 2021. The negotiation was stalled, but something is moving. In any case, Turkey had thought about purchasing the Typhoon planes as a plan B: in November 2023 it declared it was negotiating with Great Britain and Spain, but Germany was opposed. According to experts, now Washington will not hinder Ankara on the F-16s, but now Turkey seems to want to buy the Eurofighters anyway, a Turkish defense ministry official said.
