ITA Airways begins organizing Multi-Pilot Licence Flight Courses

The carrier plans to train 280 pilots over the next four years

ITA Airways announces that, for the first time since it began operations, it has begun planning its first Multi-Pilot Licence (MPL) courses, with the goal of training approximately 280 pilots over the next four years, through courses lasting a total of 21 months.

Candidate selection will begin in July, while the first courses will start in October 2026.

To participate in the selection process, candidates must be at least 17 years old, hold a high school diploma or equivalent, and have an excellent knowledge of Italian language both spoken and written, and of the English language. A DLR certification will also be required. The program isintended for candidates with no prior flight experience or limited experience.

“In a context where the availability of qualified pilots is an increasingly strategic factor for airtransport, ITA Airways has chosen to invest with foresight in developing the skills of the future. With the launch of the MPL courses, we aim to build a structured and sustainable pathway forintegrating new professionals, planning for staff turnover in the coming years and creating a pool ofhighly trained young talent”, said Marzio Caneva, Chief Operations & Accountable Manager at ITA Airways. “This initiative is part of a broader vision that will lead, in the coming months, to theestablishment of the ITA Airways flight school, a strategic project aimed at developing aviationexpertise in the country. It is an initiative that leverages our internal know-how, strengthens thecompany’s ability to meet operational needs, and reaffirms our commitment to ensuring the higheststandards of safety, quality, and reliability”.

The MPL is an advanced, internationally recognized aviation licence designed to train pilots to serve as first officers on multi-crew commercial aircraft. The training program combines theoretical instruction, flight training, state-of-the-art simulators, and specific training on airline operating procedures, with a strong focus on cockpit teamwork, safety management, and the skills required for scheduled airline operations.

ITA Airways is currently the only airline in Italy certified to offer MPL courses, and it will manage theselection and recruitment of candidates through specialized teams, drawing on a highly qualified training center. While analysts estimate that the global demand for pilots will grow significantly, Italy’s leading airline is looking to the future with a sustainable plan.
