Planes. Coronavirus crisis brings Helvetic Airways into stormy waters

The first layoffs start. Other measures to deal with the serious moment

The carrier Helvetic Airways has terminated the employment relationship with a dozen pilots and flight attendants: this is the first measure that the Swiss airline has put in place to counter the crisis due to the collapse of the demand for air transport caused by the epidemic of the coronavirus, a blow to the carrier that was not already "sailing in calm waters". In these hours the CEO Tobias Pogorevc in an interview taken by "Swissinfo" said that the company has arranged an immediate stop to new investments and the purchase of new planes. The CEO also invited employees to dispose of part of their vacation period between now and the end of June. "We expect a significant drop in demand from our partners", said the CEO. "Several charter connections, special flights and additional offers have been cancelled. We have already had to lay off a crew, that is ten to eleven people".

Still according to the Swiss on-line press, the carrier has also decided to change the internal configuration of the aircraft, to decrease the seats in order to employ a smaller crew on board. The operational fleet was brought to 13 aircraft with immediate effect, and the next deliveries of four new Embraer E-190/E2 will not all take place in the Spring of 2020, but will be staggered.
