Moscow will test the new 3M22 Zircon hypersonic missile in the spring

Powerful anti-ship weapon designed for the dominion of the seas

"Hypersonic speed, invulnerability to anti-missile defense systems and enormous attack potential": this is how the Russians define this new armament, the "promising" 3M22 Zircon (or Tsirkon) anti-ship missile, which will be tested by the new "Admiral Gorshkov" frigate class. A project that has been talked about since 2010, after President Putin had partially revealed its characteristics. Today we know more, always according to the Russians, however, that is: speed 9-13 Mach with a flight range of over a thousand kilometers, and the possibility of being launched both from the ground and from the marine platform.

Thanks to the very high speed features (it moves nine-thirteen times faster than the sound) the 3M222 -the Russian press writes in these hours- is able to hit a target at a distance of five hundred kilometers within five minutes, and is invulnerable to any missile defense system as it can be detected but not intercepted.

The armament flies at an altitude of several tens of kilometers, constantly changing trajectory and maneuvers. The head is relatively small -"Ria Novosti" still writes in particular-, however, given the high speed and the enormous kinetic energy, this is sufficient to destroy a large surface target.

Zircon was launched for the first time in 2019. Trials will continue within the Northern Fleet (the component of the Russian Navy that deals with the defense of the waters of the north-west of the Nation). Moscow for the dominion of the seas relies heavily on this type of weapon, so much so that according to the Deputy Minister of Defense Alexei Krivoruchko declared it, the latest hypersonic technology will be installed to also enhance antisom ships and the latest generation nuclear attack submarines for the Pacific Fleet.
