Russia suspends agreement with Bermuda on air safety
Airworthiness controls now in charge of Russian air transport agency
In response to the economic sanctions of the Western countries against the Kremlin, which are hitting hard the Russian air transport sector, the Russian Prime Minister, Mikhail Mishustin, ordered the suspension of an intergovernmental agreement with the Bermuda islands in these days: the pact regulated the functioning of the supervision procedures on the safety of aircrafts of many Moscow airlines.
"The transfer of airplanes to the Russian state register gives the Russian Federal Aviation Agency the opportunity to monitor their airworthiness, instead of foreign regulatory authorities", Rosaviatsia's press office said.
Why the breakdown of the agreement with the Bermuda Islands specifically? The reason is that many foreign leasing companies, which lease most of the aircraft to Russian airlines, have their fiscal headquarters right in the archipelago located off the coast of Central America. It is estimated that at least 500 Russian aircraft are involved. For its part Bermuda had cancelled services to Moscow.
