Nepal plane crash: first report

A human error by the pilots would have caused the crash - VIDEO

According to a preliminary investigative report published recently by the Nepalese State agency Aircraft Accident Investigation Commission, the plane crash that killed 72 people in Nepal on January 15, 2023 may have been caused by pilot error.

An ATR-72/500 turboprop aircraft (registration 9N-ANC) crashed killing two pilots, two crew members and 68 passengers. The airplane had crashed on the bank of the Seti River, on the outskirts of the city of Pokhara, 200 km north-west of the capital Katmandu, during the landing phase, as it approached runway 12 of the urban airport. The plane was later engulfed in flames.

According to Yeti Airlines' preliminary report on Flight YT-691, at 10:56 and 12 seconds the wing flaps were extended to 15 degrees to facilitate the approach to the airport. Then the deployment of the landing gear and the shutdown of the autopilot. The black boxes record the commander's order to set the flaps to 30 degrees, but do not register any movement; on the contrary, the power of both engines drops to 25%, probably to prevent excessive efforts, because on board there was an anomaly with one of the engines. The aircraft stalls, then crashes.

Below, the video. The images show the moments in which the pilot lost control of the plane before the crash. The aircraft can be seen spinning on itself, starting its spiral descent towards the ground. The footage was shot from the terrace of a private house.
