Gatwick Airport: thousands of passengers stranded

At least 70 flights have been cancelled and numerous others delayed

Thousands of passengers flying to and from London-Gatwick Airport were stranded yesterday afternoon after at least 70 flights were cancelled. The inconvenience was caused by the lack of personnel in the control tower of the airport and the bad weather conditions that caused numerous interruptions. The chaos occurred during one of the busiest weeks of the year for air travel in "Summer 2023".

"Gatwick has more flights to Europe than any other UK airport and can be disproportionately affected by disruptions on the continent. We are working closely with our partner airlines to minimize any disruption and apologize to any passengers who may be inconvenienced", an airport spokesman said.

Flight cancellations and diversions began in the mid-afternoon, with low-cost airline easyJet cancelling 30 flights, which also operated return trips to Geneva and Paris. Spanish low-cost airline Vueling cancelled arrivals and departures from Bilbao, Paris and Rome, as did airlines Wizz Air and Norwegian each cancelling four flights.
