A Piper PA-44/180 "Seminole" plane (registration N8360K) crashed yesterday in the United States, ending up on the roof of a house in the city of Newberg, in the State of Oregon. The aircraft belonged to the American flight school Hillsboro Aero Academy. There were three people on board. The toll of the accident is two victims: among these Michele Cavallotti, a 22-year-old pilot from Crema, Italy. An on-line video shows the final moments before impact.

According to an initial reconstruction of the accident, the aircraft suddenly began to lose altitude, crashing into a house in Newberg, a town of 20,000 inhabitants not far from Hillsboro. The aircraft penetrated the roof, leaving only the tail and a small part of the fuselage outside. The only survivor was pulled alive from the wreckage by firefighters and transported by air ambulance to a nearby hospital. The inhabitants of the house were unharmed.

Cavallotti studied at Hillsboro Academy. Father Giorgio and mother Ilenia left for the United States. The 22-year-old had graduated at the "Locatelli" Aeronautical Technical Institute in Bergamo and had left for America to attend pilot school. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) have opened an investigation into the accident.
