Malaysia accident: collision between helicopters, victims

During rehearsals for the 90th anniversary parade of the Navy

Ten dead soldiers: this is the toll from the plane crash that occurred this morning in Malaysia. Two armed forces helicopters, an AgustaWestland AW-139 (registration M503-3) and a Eurocopter 555-SN Fennec (registration M502-6), collided during the dress rehearsal for the 90th anniversary parade of the Royal Navy, in program next month.

According to an initial reconstruction, the two aircraft were engaged in flight activities at the military air base of Lumut, a coastal city located in the central-western part of the Asian country. The helicopters were flying in close formation at low altitude when at a certain point, for reasons still being ascertained, the two vehicles collided and fell to the ground. The accident occurred today around 9:30am local time.

The two rotorcraft belonged to the Royal Malaysian Navy: the AW-139 was operated by the 503rd Skuadron while the "Fennec" was operated by the 502nd Skuadron. There were a total of ten people on board the two aircraft: seven on the AW-139 and three on the "Fennec". The pilots and crew were practicing for Navy Day, a celebratory event scheduled for next week.
