IATA conference, roadmap for Airport Baggage Handling

The pillars: better exchange of information, tracking of suitcases and fight against fraud

The IATA Ground Handling Conference (IGHC), organized by the International Air Transport Association (IATA), is taking place in Nairobi, Kenya, from May 13 to 15. The event brings together airlines, airport operators, ground handling providers and manufacturers. It aims to discuss and implement shared standards, policies and procedures in the industry.

This year, IATA has defined four priorities for ground handling: integrating safety into every action, promoting global standardization, improving baggage handling operations and building a sustainable and inclusive future. The association has developed together with airlines, airports and industry partners the "Global Baggage Roadmap", a document that defines the path to improve operational efficiency in aviation and better satisfy travellers.

The roadmap is based on three pillars. The first refers to the standardization of data and the exchange of information on baggage between airlines, airports and partners to facilitate and speed up the collection of baggage by passengers thanks to an efficient messaging system. The second one provides the possibility of seeing in real time where their baggage is thanks to their tracking through the use of electronic tags, a GPS system (Global Positioning System) and robotics. Finally, the third pillar concerns the simplification of the baggage collection procedure and the fight against fraud to offer travellers a faster and safer service.
