Stansted Airport aims for 51 million passengers: more flow, same number of flights

Planning question to optimize the existing runway and generate 4,500 new jobs

The objective is to maximize the use of the single existing runway by 2040, without increasing the number of already permitted flight connections and remaining within the current boundaries of the airport

London-Stansted Airport has submitted a planning application to the Uttlesford District Council to increase its annual passenger limit to 51 millions over the next twenty years. The goal is to maximize the use of the existing single runway by 2040, without increasing the number of currently permitted flights and staying within the current airport boundaries.

If approved, Stansted’s plan foresees future investments that will unlock various opportunities and improvements. These include the creation of 4,500 new jobs, the enhancement of junction 8 of the M11 to reduce congestion, and funding for local bus services and road maintenance. Improvements will also be introduced to the Stansted Express rail service, and the airport infrastructure will be powered 100% by renewable energy. The plan also includes doubling the size of the Stansted Airport College to train more local youth, and aims to achieve 50% of passenger journeys via public transport, alleviating pressure on local roads.

In recent months, the airport has conducted extensive consultations with residents, businesses, and passengers, including a social media campaign and hundreds of individual conversations, as reported in a statement. More than 2,800 people responded to the consultation, with nearly 2,000 expressing support for Stansted’s plan.

Gareth Powell, Managing Director of London-Stansted, stated: "We have listened carefully to all the feedback from our neighbors, which has helped shape our plans to grow London Stansted in the most sustainable and responsible way possible". He added: "We have already launched our £1.2 billion five-year investment programme to transform the airport, and if this application is approved, we will be able to unlock even more opportunities and local improvements over the next 20 years. Making the best use of our existing runway will help create more jobs and training programmes, improved passenger facilities, and offer more seats for an even greater choice of destinations". Powell concluded by asking for local community support to realize this "exciting and ambitious vision".
