Disruptions continue after Collins Aerospace hack

Brussels Airport operations suspended. Frattasi (ACN): "A ransomware incident"

Difficulties continue today, albeit to a lesser extent, linked to the hacker attack on Collins Aerospace's check-in systems, which, starting Friday evening, has caused disruption at European airports, particularly Brussels, Berlin, and London-Heathrow (see AVIONEWS). Brussels-Zaventem Airport, the most severely affected, reported on "X" that "airport operations were also interrupted on Monday, September 22, causing delays and flight cancellations". The airport operator has asked airlines to cancel nearly half of their flights and urged travelers to check the status of their flights before arriving at the airport.

According to Bruno Frattasi, director general of Acn, the Italian Cybersecurity Agency, the attack -which did not affect Italy- is a ransomware attack, meaning "a blackmail with a ransom demand to regain possession of the affected IT assets". "Malicious software was certainly used to exploit a system vulnerability", he explained. "As has happened in the past, attacks like this are usually carried out by specialized crews, which the literature tells us are affiliated with the Russian-speaking world", Frattasi added. "This, however, tells us both a lot and a little: in these organizations, the line between what is committed with criminal motivations and what is driven by other factors, which in some cases overlap, is very blurred. What is certain is that today, in the current international climate, the cyber risk for key transportation structures is high, which therefore must be protected by careful surveillance".
