London: British cancels 10,000 flight connections

Drastic cut in coming months due to Heathrow airport chaos

The air carrier British Airways announced in recent hours that it will cancel about 10,000 short-haul routes scheduled between the end of October 2022 and March 2023 to and from London-Heathrow Airport. It is a decision related to the need to limit inconvenience to passengers at an airport that has repeatedly been at the center of controversy in recent months due to numerous last-minute delays and cancellations.

The airport, one of the hubs of flag airline British Airways, is still grappling with staff shortages that make it difficult to return to full passenger-transportation operations from pre-pandemic levels. The disruptions have multiplied with the start of the season marked by a boom in air travel bookings.

To address organizational problems, Heathrow Airport had imposed a limit of 100,000 departures per day until Sept. 11. A decision that had fueled resentment from the management of some air carriers. However, the airport operator was forced to postpone the deadline to October 31, 2022.
