UAE urge SAF

Accelerate Sustainable Aviation Fuel production

The UAE government is pushing for the production of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) among Gulf countries. The goal is twofold: to produce fuel to gain market share in a sector dominated by Western industry, and to stimulate the adoption of greener aircraft and vehicles by airlines and airport management companies.

"If Emirates airline alone purchased all the SAF available in the world today, it would not cover its operations. By 2030, the United States and Europe will be the largest producers, while we do not have local supplies. We must accelerate the production in this region. The control of the market and the limited availability of Saf means that the price will remain high", said Maryam Al Balooshi, director of the environment department at the General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA), interviewed by "The National".

In November 2023, a United Nations-led conference in Dubai agreed on the goal of reducing carbon emissions in the global aviation sector by -5% by 2030, precisely through the use of Sustainable Aviation Fuel, which will allow greenhouse gases by almost 65% by 2050.
