The EU condemns Trump's ban on transatlantic travel by aircraft
Joint statement by the presidents of the EC issued by Von der Leyen and Charles Michel
The joint statement released today by the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen and the President of the Council Charles Michel on the prohibition of air travel in the United States: "The coronavirus is a global crisis, not limited to any continent and requires cooperation rather than a 'unilateral action. The European Union disapproves of the fact that the United States' decision to impose a travel ban was taken unilaterally and without consultation. The EU is taking steps to limit the spread of the virus".
Today it was the European reaction to the position taken by American President Trump, who in motivating this ban, declared on 11 March: "The EU has not taken the same precautions" by not imposing the same restrictions on travel to/from China and other regions at risk. The consequence, according to the US President, was that travellers from Europe "sowed the infection clusters in the United States. In taking decisive and preventive action, in the United States we have seen dramatically fewer cases of Covid- 19 compared to those currently in Europe".
